181  Shipspotters all over the world / Shipping News and information / QE2 Arrival in Tyne update! on: September 06, 2007, 08:04:43 pm
For those who are interested the liner QE2 will arrive off the Tyne on the late afternoon of the 16th September at about 16.00 hrs.
She is due to enter the Tyne piers at 17.00 hrs.

She will then proceed upriver to the Jarrow slack 'swing area' before coming downriver to moor at Royal Quays or the old Tyne commissioners quay as us locals know it with her bow pointing downriver.
As I said before she will leave on Monday evening the 17th at about 17.00
There are river restriction in force during this time and the locals will also be out in force!

Hello Kevin
Good to hear from you,Being born in South Shield I also visited North Shield as a 'foreigner' but nights out were to the 'Jungle Bar' by the ferry landing.
I spent many a Saturday night sleeping on the ferry landing after missing the last ferry.
That was until I realised one night in my slightly hazzed mind at that time of night it was not seagulls I could hear running about but the rats!

Hello Kevin
What you say makes sence, as I said before they have been carring out survey work for the last few weeks now.
I heard the groundwork will take at least a year before they even start to build.
Mike :-)

Hi Steve
They started to survey Smiths some weeks ago,but sadley not for ship repairs.
I was told the Duke of Northumberland bought Smiths some years ago (for the land) and then for a 'few pounds profit' years later sold it to a housing developent company.
They sure will get some houses on all that space!.
I am in Turkey (working) next week on the 20th so it would be good for one of our local 'shipspotters' to just see where 'Fast Sam' does moor.

I see from 'Expected shipping' into the Tyne on the 20th is the 'Fast Sam' shown due for 'Smiths Dock'!
Smiths docks has not seen a ship for years as it has unfortunatly been derelict.
The only 'Fast Sam' I know is a little coaster, she is coming from Moerdijk in Holland which is a chemical plant industrial area!.
Fast Sam is down to sail again the 21st so she's not hanging about, hence the name 'Fast Sam'
I hope she does not try one of the Smiths drydocks the gates are sunk below the surface!

Hi Steve
According to AIS the 'Mull' sailed for Amsterdam tonight from the Tyne.

Hi Steve
Did not see the Mull when I went upriver two weeks ago I do not go upriver to much at present incase I get a plastic bag or rope around the prop as there is a lot of rubbish at present in the river.
I did see 'Fort Austin' waiting to drydock when the cable layer comes out of dock.
Also a 'Page & Moy' cruise ship leaving (not the best looking ship).
The improvements to Royal Quays will be finished later this month when all cruise ships will berth there.
Passing the 'Northern Producer' last night I thought there will be some fun when they have to 'swing' the QE2 to come back downriver, due to the rig they will have to 'Swing' her just before the Nissan terminal which is the widest part.
My guess is they will handle her with 4 local Switzer tugs,by the way take a look at the 'tanker sailing' in 'ships Nostalgia'tonight with minimum 7 'Tyne tugs' maybe more, as I said the QE2 is no big deal in size for the Tyne, mind she is long!.
Regards
Mike :-)

Its good to know, dont suppose you know when tyneside is handing Svitzer Mull back over to Teesport?

Hello Natham
We like all tugs on Tyneside, infact any bodies tugs big and small alike!
Regards

Re: LINER 'QE 2 ' TO VISIT THE TYNE
I bet some Teesport tugs will be needed?
Unless they are going to draft a large tug in, like Maersk Advancer?

The QE2 is a baby to some of the ships we have handled on Tyneside, we are short of a few things on Tyneside but tug HP or tug handling skills is not one of them!.

Hi Steve
They will probably close the river to any shiping of any kind during her arrival as they did with the rig arrival two weeks ago.
What everyone also forgets by September 16th it may be also getting dark at around six!
I might get out earliar to sea for a better shot depending on the weather,I only hope it's better than the 'Air show' when I photographed a lot of 'sky' due to the sea conditions.
Regards
Mike :-)

I have it on good authority the following information:

For those that may have a camera available the 'QE2' is at present due in the Tyne at 1800 hrs on Sunday September 16th 2007.
She will sail the following day Monday 17th at
approx 1800 hrs.
She will berth at Royal Quays.

Now we know why the crane has been increased in height!
Glad I was not imagining things! :-)
194  Shipspotters all over the world / Shipping News and information / Re: It's got taller! but do you know why? on: August 02, 2007, 08:20:21 pm
Hi Steve
Yes you are right, the new berth has been fenced off and will be controlled when ships are alongside, this is particuly done for visiting naval ships due to security.
You can access the frontage onto the car park easily but this would not be good anyhow for photo's.
I used to live in South Shields and the Mill Dam has always been a good place to take pictures of ships along side the commissioners quay.
However as you are aware there are plenty of good spots along the river!
I put a couple of offshore shots on 'ships Nostagie' of   HMS Albion and the Tynemouth lifeboat which I took from my boat last weekend at the Sunderland Air show on Sunday, however taking pictures in a rolling sea is not the best of places or while you are trying to sail at the same time!
Regards
Mike. :-)

Akers (Readheads to me)yard seems to be busier in the last couple of weeks with one or two offshore boats loading structral sections.
Infact the river appears to be getting more busier. '
Fort Austin' arrived and was not on the shipping list to drydock and there have been and still are a number of cruise liners visiting the river with the QE2 due soon.
As I pass the 'Royal Quays berth' every weekend or the old Tyne Commissioners Quay to me and locals it is now nearing completion of its re-fit and I am informed most of visiting cruise liners will use this berth and visiting Naval ships in future.
The QE2 is expected to use this berth due to her length and draft.
Mike :-)
