Has there been any change in admin ability to update/add new locations since this thread was last updated? I noticed that the "New Locations" list on the "Photos" tab frequently updates with new ports.

I have a few pictures posted in a couple different ports that are currently not registered on the site, and would be happy to give an admin info about these ports if they currently have the ability to add new locations. Please message me or let me know the proper person to contact to have locations added, if this ability has become possible!

Hi, refer to the topic that Bjørn Knudsen shared up above for the story.  It will likely be months before we hear the fate of the ST. CLAIR, however. I suspect there will be plenty of investigations and political hoops to jump through to get to the bottom of this, with a lot of parties involved.

As for the future of the boat, some of the optimistic possibilities suggest that the entire stern end be rebuilt. Another suggestion was to convert the stern into an articulated barge, but her unusual draft may make that difficult. We still aren’t quite sure the exact extent of damage, but the fear is that the hull has been damaged beyond repair, and that factor may send the boat the the scrappers. Her current cargo runs are being outsourced to other companies for the time being.

All we can do right now is speculate, but weeks or months down the road, I will try to update once I hear official word. Either way, it doesn’t look good.

Slight correction to yesterday’s post: The Pierre Radisson did in fact reach Midland successfully, and both ice breaker and freighter are finally on the move out through Georgian Bay! I suppose that the hardest work to break ice is now behind us, and ice breaking activity should start to calm down, especially with Samuel Risley up and running again. Another hint of this is that USCG Mackinaw has headed back to her home port.

Was away for a while traveling, but am back now and have seen all the unusual ice breaker activity! The past couple weeks have been very interesting;
CCG Samuel Risley went down with engine troubles, keeping her docked in Thunder Bay. This forced USCG Alder to spend a bit of time in Thunder Bay until Canadian reinforcements arrived. Those reinforcements included CCG Griffon and Pierre Radisson. (Unsure of exactly when and what order they arrived in.)
Within those couple weeks, several attempts were made by both US and Canadian coast guard to break out heavy ice in Georgian Bay to free a Canadian freighter that is trapped in Midland. The Pierre Radisson was the primary vessel to attempt to break through, which she attempted two times, unsuccessfully, before heading up towards Thunder Bay.
All of this movement caused CCG Amundsen and Des Groseilliers to take over in the lower lakes, and we even saw Martha L. Black here for a short period of time. Amundsen has since returned to Quebec and Des Groseilliers is still south of the Welland Canal.

Yesterday, the Pierre Radisson made a third attempt to break through Georgian Bay, which appears to have been unsuccessful.
As of today, the Samuel Risley appears to be back up and running, and joins Griffon in Thunder Bay operations. The rest of the focus has been placed on Whitefish Bay, north of the Soo, where USCG Mackinaw has been tirelessly assisting vessels for weeks. Among other vessels to assist in that area over the past two weeks include USCG Hollyhock, Biscayne Bay, and Katmai Bay.

It has been very interesting to watch, especially with all the unusual visits by CCG vessels. The most interesting to follow is the ongoing struggle to get the freighter BAIE COMEAU (IMO 9639892) out of the ice trap in Midland.

Louise Knutsen (IMO 9442249) left Amsterdam tonight under the name Louise K ( Callsign T2JS5) destination Halifax.

According to a photo on Algoma Central’s social media, the vessel has already been renamed ALGOTERRA, but for some reason, she shows up on AIS as LOUISE K. (She was purchased by Algoma Central and was headed to Halifax to begin working under Canadian flag.)

Griffon now sits at the north end of Lake Ontario, and the Martha L. Black is transiting the Welland Canal as we speak, nearly to Port Colborne. I would assume that Martha L. Black will take the place of Pierre Radisson who’s assistance is needed in Georgian Bay of Lake Huron to help laker Baie Comeau out of Midland, were she is stuck in layup due to heavy ice.

Since this news posting came out, it appears that Griffon and Pierre Radisson were able to get things freed up enough to resume traffic, an most vessels seem to be on their way. Both Pierre Radisson and Griffon are currently sitting S/SE of Port Colborne, while Martha L Black is anchored in the seaway just south of Ogdensburg, probably as a “just in case.”

Thank you for sharing that article! I was also noticing yesterday the unusual amount of vessels lined up in Port Colborne..

I believe that both vessels are there in support of transits through Erie and Ontario. Most coast guard vessels are in the upper lakes currently assisting as the season gets underway.
USCG Hollyhock, USCG Katmai Bay, USCG Biscayne Bay are all assisting in thick ice near Mackinac Island.
USCG Neah Bay is assisting in the St. Mary’s River near the Soo.
USCG Mackinaw is near Whitefish Bay to assist in that heavy ice, while USCG Alder assists in Duluth and CCG Samuel Risley assists in Thunder Bay.

Since most of the attention is on the upper lakes with the heavy ice that is up there, I don’t think its far-fetched to assume that CCG has brought Pierre Radisson and Griffon to assist in the lower lakes as backup. Martha L. Black was also headed for the lakes but it appears she has headed back for Montreal, assuming she is not needed.

On Saturday, 2/17 a fire broke out on the 770’ self-unloading bulker ST. CLAIR (IMO 7403990), leaving the aft superstructure destroyed, as well as much of the internal self-unloading machinery and possibly the hull. The vessel was sitting in winter layup when the incident occurred, one that was believed to be caused by welding work taking place on the ship. Rubber from the ship’s unloading system and conveyor belt caught fire, and it is still unclear the exact amount of damage inside the vessel. At one point, the ship’s entire 250’ self-unloading boom was engulfed in flames, as you will be able to view in a photo gallery I will post with this topic. The fire burned for over a day before it could be completely extinguished, and speculation arises about whether it will be determined a total constructive loss, or could be rebuilt efficiently.

Here is the original reports from Saturday and Sunday:

2/17 - Oregon, Ohio - Noon update - Thick black smoke is still coming from the cabin area of the St. Clair. This is almost 16 hours since the first alarm was sounded for this fire.

The Coast Guard was conducting pollution assessment of the Maumee River. Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Detroit Command Center were notified of the fire about 9: 30 p.m. by members of Coast Guard Station Toledo. The Coast Guard responded along with fire fighters from eight local fire departments

The external fire is currently under control. Preventative measures continue on adjacent ships using water-cooling techniques.

A helicopter crew and a pollution responder, aboard a helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, conducted an aerial observation of the area at first light Sunday and determined there was no pollution in the Maumee River.

9 a.m. update - Sunday morning the fire is still burning in the accommodations block of the St. Clair. Pictures from the scene show extensive heat damage through the vessel from the unloading system at deck level to the upper cabins. Fire crews are reported to be making progress but it is unknown when the fire will be extinguished.

12 a.m.  update  –  Late Saturday firefighters in Toledo were battling flames aboard the St. Clair docked at the Port of Toledo. The fire department was dispatched about 8:45 p.m. to the Torco Dock. Arriving firefighters reported seeing smoke and fire from the vessel’s stack. An aerial ladder was hoisted to attack the blaze.   No one was aboard, and there was no cargo on the vessel at the time of the fire.

Nearly two hours later, residents several miles away reported they smelled burning rubber and saw gray smoke in the air. The St. Clair arrived for winter lay-up at the Torco Dock on January 14.  Repair work is performed on a vessel while they are in lay-up, it is not uncommon to have welding crews completing steel work.

Pictures posted to social media showed fire crews pumping water onto the stern and others showed the entire length of the self unloading boom on fire. The unloading conveyor belts run under the cargo hold and then loop through the accommodations block. A fire spreading through these spaces could cause catastrophic damage to a vessel covering multiple decks.

Fire fighting efforts have also been hampered by lack of water, there was only one hydrant reported in that area and the river was said to be frozen. Crews have been unable to fight the fire from aboard the vessel adding to the concern for the fire spreading through the ship.

Fire crews have been working to keep the fire from spreading to the Great Republic, dock off the St Clair's starboard side.

Really interesting pictures!

I thought I would share this incident with the worldwide community, and would love to hear thoughts on it. Specifically, I’d like to hear thoughts about the possible hull damage that could possibly take place with extreme heat on the steel that sits in frozen water, if anyone has any knowledge on that.

Back in November, I mistakenly did not post this when Algoma Central made the purchase, and do not see any post of it otherwise..

RAMIRA (IMO 9362152) Sweden  renamed  ALGONORTH  Canada

Renaming occurred within dates November 9-12, 2018. It is unclear which day exactly. (If anyone knows the exact date, I’ll gladly update/correct.)

November 9th was the exact date of the renaming.

I checked the AIS and it shows that as of 4 hours ago, she had officially been beached. Prior to being beached, she had been sitting in anchorage for a couple days.

How long does it usually take for them to send you a response? It has been several days for me and I haven’t heard a response. Perhaps they form in which I suggested corrections is not the proper way to do so..

MarineTraffic isn’t completely perfect, which you cant blame it for, and sometimes I notice errors on specs for vessels. Mostly improper length/size, vessel type, etc. So, sometimes I am able to recognize a fault and I go in and “suggest changes” and place the proper length, etc, and submit for moderator review.

I was just wondering; does anyone here have any experience with correcting and submitting info on MarineTraffic to be fixed? Do your suggestions ever bring about any fixes to vessel info on the application? Are the moderators usually good with correcting errors when brought to their attention?
I’d like to hear your thoughts and experiences with this.
