Title: ship hits bridge
Post by: Trucker001 on January 28, 2012, 12:34:22 AM
The Delta Mariner is idle at the US68/KY80 Eggner's Ferry Bridge, with two destroyed spans of the bridge draped over her bow, on Kentucky Lake near Golden Pond, Ky., Friday, Jan. 27, 2012. The vessel struck the bride Thursday night, causing a portion of the bridge to collapse onto the bow. The road that connects Land Between the Lakes and Aurora has been closed

Josip

why the captain ? those ships have pilots aboard,,the captain might not have been on the bridge at that moment. River navigation,, 2-3 days, you think that the capt stays then 2-3 days awake ?  Even by regs/law (which are knowingly by everbody who knows ships and the business vilotated daily) the Capt is not allowed to do that,, so sooner or later the Capt will not be on the bridge. But a pilot is,,because for longer trips there are usually two pilots which alternating every 6 hrs.

Hi Josip
no apologies needed
But of course no Capt can have all licenses, especially when it comes to rivers. Even the rules of navigation are on rivers different then at sea, for obvious reasons. sometimes Capt,s have even pliot exemptions, I for one had a exemption for the Humber River up
to Hull in the UK. But that is usually on bigger ships seldom the case. If you go up rivers, like this vessels and that all the way,,Kentucky,, that,s 3 days or more. The vessel pictured and/or involved is actually a vessel with american flag. She carries
for the NASA big modules for rockets and was involved for the transport of the booster rockets for the american shuttle fleet. But I am pretty sure that the Master abaord will not
have a pilot license for all the way up there, that would be extrem unusuall.

I had one exemption also, for the Port River at Port Adelaide South Australia and its environs.

Cheers and GB
