Title: Vale Rio de Janeiro Begins Loading Today!
Post by: Robert McDonald on December 19, 2011, 06:40:03 PM
With a wounded Vale Beijing still anchored about 5 miles off Sao Luis in the Roads, plans are moving forward to load the "Rio."

Vale Rio de Janeiro begins loading at PDM Berth 1 this afternoon (Brazil time.) She is scheduled to load 386,000 mt. This will be a "nail chewer" for everyone to be sure!

Vale Italia is scheduled to Berth 1 to load 390,000 mt, on Wednesday the 21st.

Plans to load Vale China are uncertain, probably based on what happens - or doesn't happen with the "Rio" and "Italia" over the next few days. She is scheduled to Berth 1 on New Years, but notice on today's Position Report, no estimate to berth nor departure dates entered!

Events this week may change that schedule.

Today we read that one of Vale Beijing's sisters is coming to Rotterdam early Januari, so I guess it could be Vale Rio de Janeiro who will come to Rotterdam.
We'll see.

Ah Fred,
I've still got my fingers crossed for you. Maybe if your Christmas present didn't arrive as predicted something may turn up in the New Year! Here's hoping :) :)

I wonder if they are going easy with the loading, perhaps with a lower loading rate, until they find out why Vale Beijing was damaged during loading...

Of course both Vale Rio de Janeiro and Vale Italia were built by DSME, which already has a good track record with Vale Brasil, while the ill-fated Beijing was built by STX. Rongsheng-built Vale China is another "wild card", being the first of her kind.

There are some external differences between the Valemax ships built in different shipyards, not to mention Berge's 388,000 DWT VLOCs that are apparently also referred to as Valemax vessels as they have been chartered by Vale, but it would be interesting to see some in-depth comparison between the different ships, e.g. steel drawings and strength calculations.

Vale Rio de Janeiro left her berth in San Luis and is heading for Canary Island, ETA: 2011-12-28 13:00 (UTC) At this moment she is doing only 1 knot.

She seems to have given up Fred.
Now parked at an anchorage.
She has been replaced on the berth though by Vale Italia.

Bummer :-[

I had bad feelings already, when I saw her there doing only one knot.
I still think we will see one of them here real soon, I stay optimistic.

Hi Rob,

All cranes were up at the Maasvlakte today, same for EECV I guess, so that is probably one day delay already for Eva N.

Hi Fred,

In the pilot list, she must exchange berth with Eva N and
Arrived on high tide.  6th jan 0050. So night time  :(.
Depending on the sea/swell condition.
Sea will go up to 6 meters and swell to 3 meters tomorrow.
So eurogeul closed.

Suspect she have to drop anchor.

It's not getting better. NW force 9 and high tide expected tonight/tomorrow. They're contemplating closing the Maeslant Barrier. This effectively blocks the New Waterway to Rotterdam, although Calandcanal remains accessible.
Is pilotage suspended Frans ?

Ciao,
Rob.

Hi Rob,

Pilotage is continuing for some ships.
The ones without wind restrictions and which are able to reach pilot by helicopter will go in and out.
The small ships up to 125 without chemicals in bulk (read tankers) and regularly calling tankers will get pilot inside the breakwater by boat or disembark there.

So far no info that storm barrier (Maesland Barrier) will closed.

Frans

Storm abating; Maeslantbarrier remains open.
Just spoke with Port Authority but they couldn't say yet when "Vale Rio de Janeiro" would berth. Main problem is the present swell. Vessel's draught. is 22,60 mtrs.
So Fred, if we're not lucky berting tonight; if we're lucky tomorrow a.m.
Maybe Frans can furnish up-to-date input.

Ciao,
Rob.

Hello Rob and Fred,

Vale Rio de Janeiro now on the list for 06 22:59.
But I have doubt if this is possible.

If you visit the site..
http://www.meetadviesdienst.nl/nl/klanten/loodsdiensten/loods-haven-regio-rijnmond.htm

You can see hydro meteo verwachting voor de Eurogeul.
In column HE 10 you see for each hour the gk=..
This is the golf class.
I'm not a deep draft pilot, but I thought the Gk =<5 in order to enter.
For 22.55 mtr draft may be even less.

Frans

Eva N left this morning, so her berth is free. Lets hope for tomorrow afternoon.

Just checking time of High water is 14:14.

Perhaps they have to arrive after the strong counter current from Nijlharbour (Gate terminal).
So between 15:30 and 16:00.

Better check you AIS from time to time

If a number of photographers got a number of photographs of the ship, I wonder if it would be possible to have (at least) one picture published under a Creative Commons licence and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/)? The article about Valemax ships (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valemax) could benefit from a picture or two.

Although it is easier if the author uploads the photographs by himself, it can also be done by others if a declaration of consent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Declaration_of_consent_for_all_enquiries) is given by e-mail. If you would like to contribute but don't e.g. have an account for Commons, drop me a PM and I'll do it.
