Title: Photo location - How to suggest additions / updates?
Post by: foggy on October 20, 2011, 12:25:31 PM
Hi,

Having spent quite a lot of time adding the photo location to my "back catolouge" on this site, I noticed that a lot of ports are missing in the photo location database, especially ports in the Caribbean/Latin America area and ports in the USEC/New York area. I also miss some ports in Philippines and South East Asia, as well as some ports in Sweden and Scandinavia. I'm sure there are others.

1. What database/list of ports do you use?
2. How can this database list of ports be updated, and how can we users suggest ports to be added?

That is my problem, I have a lot of pictures that I do not want to put until you determine the correct port.
Help, as soon as possible

Hi,

Great questions! I'm happy to hear locations/ports is an appreciated functionality. I'll try to summarize the latest updates on this for you.

The main port database is provided by ShipTrax. We have expanded this to a locations database here on ShipSpotting.com. Our own locations database supports other locations than just ports.

As we're working on an AIS application for this site, we have the same ports included there as well. In parallell we're working on a system to expand and correct the port data.

The main problem is that we want everything to be extremely stable/reliable. This requires a verification system of all added ports. This is not yet in place. At the same time we don't want our own system to clash with updates on the main ports database we use, in case changes/additions or deletions occur there. The worst thing would be if things were changed so that the location of the photo is corrupted/bad in some way. This is what we're working hard to prevent, and the main reason it's not yet online.

The addition of spotting locations, such as ports, will probably be made by putting a pin on the map where the place is. We haven't decided yet if that's to be made in the (coming) AIS map, or in a separate spotting location application.

Regards,
Henrik

Henrik,

Thank you for a quick and explanatory reply. I suspected it was linked in some way to the AIS project...  ;)

If I may suggest a reliable source, then most ports around the world are listed in Lloyds Maritime Atlas with position data. Why not simply enter this information (or from a similar source) into the system, instead of sporadic updates whenever a new photo is uploaded or you get a new AIS entry?

If you go to http://www.novascotiawebcams.com/bay-of-fundy/halls-harbour-1.html, you can see Big 60 Foot lobster boats come and go in real time. Vote, so we can be included in "The New 7 Natural Wonders Of The World". Also, there is: http://www.abaycams.com/abaycams.asp if you want to watch huge Lakers(500+Feet) and other gigantic ships go through the St.Lawrence Seaway!
