Title: Tuxedo Princess leaves the Tyne at last!
Post by: Mike on July 23, 2008, 02:52:43 PM
Newcastle will finally see its 'Ex floating Disco' the 'Tuxedo Princess' leave the Tyne next week.
Tyne Port Authority have her due to leave Newcastle at 08.00 on Sunday 27th and move to Northumbrian Quay North Shields before sailing under tow with the Norweigen Ocean tug 'Pantodynamos' for Piraeus Greece on Wednesday 28th July.
The Gateshead Quay side will just not look the same anymore!

Mike :-)

I bet Gateshead/Newcastle wish HMS Caliope would go the same way.

Hi Chris

What - you mean towed out to sea by a tug  :-)

Difference here is that it wasn't the Council that wanted the Tuxedo Princess out of the Tyne, it was the ships owners. The very same Council DO however want HMS Calliope to relocate as the reckon the building doesn't fit in with its environs, namely Sage and Baltic. Odd how they never minded when it was a modern building in a run down area!

Im happy for HMS Calliope to stay where it is. It also gives pilots very good training for helicopters getting in and out of tight close spaces. Very impressive when they come into land as well.

Pantodynamos is more a Greek name? She will be towed to Greece and after that? Aliaga to be demolished? Anyone know?

Well it is a ship all be it a stone ship

Would of thought that Swan Hunters would be a perfect relocation, unless Tesco's have got there first 8-) .

Hi Pieter

Oddly enough there has been nothing in the local media about the departure of one of Tyneside's  long time residents although given the condition of her not many will shed a tear.

I would be surprised if she was being towed away for demolition - if the ship was to be scrapped I would have thought a cheaper move would have been 40 nautical miles down to the Tees where Able UK Ltd have just been granted a license to scrap ships.

There was a lot in the media just before  christmas , they were making a big thing about her closing, I agree why cant they send her to be with her sister at Able:-

The port of Pyraeus in Greece is mainly a ferry port so heavy forbid they will re-use Tuxedo Princess as a ferry again.
Piraeus is also well known for laid up ships so maybe she will join the list, or maybe they need livening up and need a Disco.
Maybe one of our Greek shipspotters will keep us up to date on her final fate.

Of course the 'assumption' is that she is going to the breakers - however I have heard she will be spruced up and joining the QE2 in Dubai as the Disco of the Desert

Hi Mike

I'm wondering if she is going to Pyraeus on the basis that the Tug Pantodynamous is based in that Port - perhaps a transitory stop wit a change of Tug?

Hi Mike

True, oh so true.
Must be at least 10 years since I last looked over the edge of the Tyne Bridge to see what she was like from on high and her decks were a total mess with all sorts of rubbish strewn about.

I'm hoping to get some snaps of her tomorrow if the weather is fine  :-)

Hi All

Just heard that owing to the lack of or discrepancy in the Tuxedo Princess's 'seaworthy certificates' that she will not be moving out of the Tyne until matters are sorted out!

Still on the PTA Schedules to move down to the Northumbrian Quay though  :-)

Pantodynamos
Spoke to her skipper this afternoon, they needed to load generators and some parts and emergency spares onto Tuxedo Princess anyhow which they did not want to load at Newcastle quay as Tuxedo Princess has now no power onboard.
When Tuxedo Princess came alongside Northumbrian Quay she was then handed over and under the command of Pantodynamos.
They had always planned for an eary start Monday Morning, but our boats that did go out reported fog up to 30 miles offshore.
I also spoke one of the guards on HMS Southampton who said the decision would be made at 13.00 to go to Sunderland or not, this was cancelled as the Captain said if they did go 'nobody would know anyhow' !
Do not know if any of you saw the panic at Northumberland Quay when Pantodynamos came back alongside to moor between Tuxedo Junction and Southampton, the crew on deck of Southampton paniced as they thought she was going to scratch her bow and paintwork.
Pantodynamos moored right under Southamptons bow and in true tugmanship did not touch a mouse!
Mike :-)

hi Mike,
The maltby and the rowangarth were moored up alongside the greek tug when I turned up at the Mill Damm, I had just been down the A1, what I heard on the VHF was that the tug skippers and the skipper off thePantodynamos decided that it was a no go, the 2 river tugs then went up to Riverside Quay to wait for The City Of Lutece, the pilot managed to get aboard and then decided to send the ship to anchor and also went on the phone to VTS , for some reason!!!!!!?????? he then took about hour before he reboarded the pilot boat!!!

It seams to me that there is something wrong with the ship(City of Lutece) to me. What do you  think?
Title: Re: Tuxedo Princess leaves the Tyne at last!
Post by: Mike on July 27, 2008, 08:28:06 PM
Hi Brian
City of Lutece may also have delayed sailing due to fog, Lyme Bay was due to dock but also abandened it also there not that a lot of space was available at Northumberland Quay.
Our boats reported fog right up and down the coast and up to 30 mile offshore.
I was up at Newcastle quay this morning and when Tuxedo Junction was passing under the Mellenium bridge when a little girl next to me asked her father 'daddy,' why is the ship going the wrong way!
Daddy relies, cause it won't go through the gap side ways!

Don't mention that 'swear word' - FOG - I've been trying to escape from it on the Eastern Coast of Scotland since last Sunday! - the fog was so bad last night that the Port of Aberdeen was closed until the wee hours.

Hi Mike

Whilst the Tuxedo Princess would have taken its power source directly from shore whilst it was berthed at Gateshead Quay you would have thought they would have back up generators onboard - i suspect however that all of the back up would have been on land.

I suppose there would have to be a power source onboard for the tow to Greece, even if its only to provide electricity to the Tuxedo Princess' navigation lights  :-)

Although the subject and translation is a bit tricky to decipher . . this could suggest that she has already left Piraeus, with speculation she is bound for Aliaga ????  Any ideas/more info?

Hi andeedob

Interesting stuff - Aliaga - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alia%C4%9Fa

Aliağa is a town and a district of İzmir Province in the Aegean Region of Turkey. The town is situated at about 50 km (31 mi). north of İzmir and the economic activity is centered around an oil refinery, as well as tourism.

In the maritime world Aliaga is most known for its big ship demolition area so most definitely that will be her fate.

Hi Aleksi

This all seems to b surrounded in 'mystery and intrigue' - on one hand we are learning she has been renamed Prince and to be converted into a floating restaurant and the next that she is going for scrap.
If she was going for demolition we have a newly licensed facility just 25 miles down the North East Coast of England- Able UK @ Graythorpe that could have demolished her and saved the cost of the haul to Turkey.

No doubt we will find out in due course

Have to agree that surely towing her to Turkey to scrap would surely be more expensive.
And it would be a great shame if that happened now.

Btw i found this forum after reading some Urban exploration forums which mentioned the Tuxedo O/Cally P which in turn had me googling tuxedo princess which eventually led me here.

Have always liked ships but not a serious ship spotter,i live in Methil in Fife where they used to make the oil rig platforms, now seeing them leave on the barges was a site to see. :-D

For those of you that may have missed her, pictures of the now 'Prince'
(Ex Tuxedo Princess) can be seen on 'Ships Nostalgia' under Ferries at her berth last week in Pireaus Greece.
Also note the 'Carlesberg' sign has been painted out.
When you look at these picture you can begin to understand why Gateshead council wanted her out of the way.
Pity a few coats of paint and a Million pounds might  have tidied her up!

Hi all

Am I cynical or what?   I get the feeling that someone on the payroll of shipbreakers offers to buy old ships for whatever reason. Gets the owners of the ship to sail it to him. He then renegades on the deal. Now the ship is near the shipbreakers yard - they offer to scrap it. As nobody else wants the ship and it's too far to return to 'home', shipbreaker gets at rock bottom price.
