Title: Painting scale models
Post by: Hugo on March 27, 2008, 01:01:34 PM
Hi

I am busy constructing a scale model of the QE2, and recently received an airbrush which I want to try and use to paint her.
The problem is i can't get it to work...i'm using a Puma AB-1006 airbrush with a compressed gas air cartridge. I have stripped the thing to see how it works - and all looks fine, except no paint coming out the nozzle. Could the pressure in the air cartridge be too low? Do I need a compressor. The manual suggest no more than 5 bar.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Regards
Hugo

For a freebie, assuming you have space under the desk, inflate an old tyre to 5 BAR and you will have a plentiful supply of air. A mini tyre rather than a truck tyre!!

Hi guys

I have to say I have used a tyre myself. Ok for small jobs. It is frustrating when the pressure is gone before finishing the job. Canisters are the same. For a continuous supply a small compressor is best for larger jobs. I know someone who even built his own compressor from an old refrigerator compressor unit. Works great!

Hi again
In regards to no paint coming out of your airbrush is your nozzle adjustment open? Also check for any blockages. Air brushes are very fine in their construction and it does not take very much to block them especially if they are not cleaned properly after use. You need to thin your paint right down with acylic thinners. Also clean the airbrush after use straight away by filling the paint bottle (cleaned) with thinners and blowing through the air brush till no more colour comes out the nozzle. If all fails see your nearest Hobby Shop who should be able to help you. If you have not used your airbrush before, practice on a piece of scrap plastic or what ever material your model is constructed to get used to how it works.
