Hi Jasa

The picture in Gdańsk is more complex.  Northern Shipyard are part of Remontowa Group and most Remontowa new builds are actually built on the Northern Shipyard shipways, with fitting out at the Remontowa yard.   Stal-Rem are also part of the Remontowa group and carry out building of hulls (fishing boats / tugs etc) at Northern Shipyard.

There are still 3 slipways open on the Stocznia Gdańska site (now part of Stocznia Gdynia Gp) and they build some of the vessels for the Group especially the 8184 type box boats.  Stocznia Gdańska have also recently built hulls of seismic survey vessels for Bergen Mek. Verk. Geo Pacific and Geo Caribbean.   It would appear the slips are also utilised by other companies such as Crist and Stal-Rem from time to time.

Also operating at Gdańsk are the yards of Crist, mainly large fishing vessels and research vessels such as James Cook and the river shipyard Stocznia Wisła which is currently building 5 fishing vessels, WKT33,8 for Angola.

If the EU get their way and close 2 slipways at SG, it will be the end of shipbuilding on the site, it can not survive with only one slipway.   Its difficult for the yards to compete with Japan, Korea and China as it is, what the hell do EU beaurocrats know about shipbuilding anyway ?

Hope this helps

Allan

Hi again,

About Remontowa. They have newbuildings (or outfitting of casco's), but how about the repair? Is it the only shipyard in Gdansk whit drydocks for shiprepairs?
And if I'm right, Remontowa is NOT a part of Gdanska Shipyard (which is part of Stocznia Gdynia???)?

My question is: how many yards are there in Gdansk? Because in shipbuilding papers I only can find one yard, the Gdansk Yard, and not Remontowa and / or Northern Shipyard.

In Gdansk we have 3 bigger shipyards: Gdansk Shipyard (Stocznia Gdansk SA), Northern Shipyard (Stocznia Polnocna) and Remontowa Shipyard (Stocznia Remontowa).
Northern and Remontowa are now together in "Remontowa Group". Northern in the past builded vessels for Warsaw Pact navies (mainly landing crafts). Remontowa is now repairing ships in dry docks.
Gdansk Shipyard was in Gdynia Shipyard Group (Grupa Stoczni Gdynia) from 1998 to 2006. Now it is again independent.

Hi there,

I thought my previous post had explained the Gdańsk situation.   Remontowa is NOT part of Stocznia Gdynia-Gdańska Gp.   Remontowa Gp. comprises Gdańska Stocznia Remontowa, Northern Shipyard and Stal-Rem and various other smaller component parts.  As far as I am aware, only Remontowa have dry/floating docks for major ship repair.  Remontowa's newbuilds are built on the slipways of Northern Shipyard.

Stocznia Gdanska was formed from the remnants of the former Ferdinand Schichau Werft and Northern Shipyard from the remains of Danziger Werft.

Other major ship repairs in the area are carried out in Gdynia at Stocznia Marynarki (Naval Shipyard) and Nauta Ship Repair Yard.

REMONTOWA Group:
- Gdańsk Shiprepair Yard Remontowa SA
    mother company of the Group
most newbuilding  contracts are recently signed by Remontowa SA
or REMONTOWA Group with great majority of newbuilding orders
executed by (ships actually built at) Northern Shipyard

Remontowa has own FLOATING docks in Gdansk and hires one (the smaller one) DRY dock from Gdynia Shipyard for several months now (at least until the end of this year)...

Remontowa floating docks are not only used for repairs but sometimes also for extensive conversions...

Gdansk Shipyard has a well known history, with 1980 as a milestone, which can be said. The shipyard is a state-owned shipyard, and is now in financial problems by misspending aid of $69m. from the EU).
<<<<<

The shipyard is not state owned any more. It was privatised towards the end of 2007. It is owned by ISD Polska - Polish subsidiary of Ukrainian industrial groub Donbas.

The aid was not from the EU.

The problem with EU is that it steals independence and sovreignity from member countries - the fact that was unfortunately overlooked by those people, who were voting for joining EU in referenda in various countries...

The matter relates to Polish government aid (Polish taxpayers' money) to shipyards, not the "EU money"...

The problem is that Brussels dictates / imposes whether the country may help (support) its shipyards with public funds or not...
Maybe it would be good (to protect fair competition, etc..).
However in one instance EU does not allow Polish government (Polish taxpayers) to support Polish yards, but in another instance EU allows much more money to be fastly pumped in Belgian or French banks during current crisis...  that's certainly inconsistent and not fair, that various countries and various industries are treated much differently...

as far as EU's "caring" for free market and fair competition is concerned - look also at agriculture, heavy subsidized for years (which, paradoxically, brought only increase of food prices, and nothing good)...

get ready for HUGE energy prices increases in the years to come (much higher than actual price rises of energetic raw materials), because of UE policy of insane, exagerated "pro-environmental surcharges" imposed on fuel, cars, airline tickets, etc.
