Title: Ships Collide Off Israeli Coast
Post by: Nathan on August 30, 2007, 09:13:45 PM
Quote from the BBC :
'Reports suggested a small ship - either a fishing boat or a cargo vessel - sank when it collided with a passenger ship.

The Israeli military said there were likely to be casualties. Two crew members from the smaller ship were said to be missing at sea.

At least 11 other sailors - all from Slovakia - were rescued, according to reports on Israeli radio.

Emergency crews said one woman from the passenger ship had suffered a minor injury, according to Spanish news agency EFE.

Military helicopters have been drafted in to help search for the missing sailors.

The collision was believed to have been an accident, possibly caused by a malfunction in the navigation equipment on the smaller vessel.'

Sounds rather bad, bbc have not stated when the accident taken place.

The accident happened on Thursday, 30th of August 2007, after dusk, around 22.00 of local time.

1) from a friend of mine:
Shelly was at anchor, either coming from or about to leave for Larnaca/CY, Salamis Glory "rammed into her side"; Shelly broke in two and sunk "immediately". Eleven crew men were picked up by Salamis Glory, other two were searched for by israeli navy. Divers only found their bodies inside the wreck.

2) Slovakia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with SK embassy in Israel reckon no Slovak national was on board of either vessel.

(Does not really matter where they were from, they are unfortunately dead now...)

kind'a late post
i was in haifa when it happened, and right away, i went to stella maris site, which provides gr8 look at the entire haifa harbour, and the drama was very intensive.
i took some images of the event, from quite a distance, and due to the darkness, with not such a good quality, but yet again, images give some idea, about the accident, and the soon time that followed...
i cannot post the images here, but if anyone wants, i can send him.
