Title: Three rescuers and one fisherman died in storm off Les Sables d'Olonne
Post by: Jerzy Rakowski on June 08, 2019, 09:18:59 am
During the storm Miguel raging over the Vendée coastline with gusts of up to 129 km/h, the "Patron Jacques Morisseau - SNS 061" of the SNSM-statin Sables-d'Olonne with seven people on board on June 7, 2019, at 11 a.m. was called to assist the 11,5-m-gillnetter "Carrera - IO.462665", 10 gt (MMSI: 227734670), with a length of 11.5 meters, registered in Oléron (Charente-Maritime) and based in Sables-d'Olonne, which had got in trouble in the rough sea 2,5 miles off the coast, while trying to return to port, and whose skipper Tony Guibert had activated the EPIRB. The lifeboat capsized 800 meters off the beach of Tanchet after a wave broke the winddows of the cockpit with ensuing water ingress and a short circuit, causing the engine to fail. At 11.36 a.m. a witness reported the grounding of the boat. The socalled Novi plan (many victims) was acctivated, and 70 firefighters and a dozen staff from SAMU were mobilized accordingly. The Ocean Sport Institute served as the operational base. Three helicopters of the civil security, the National Gendarmerie and the Navy also participated in the SAR operation. Eight people who had tried to help on the shore spontaneously were takencare of by firefighters. Four crew members were able to swim onto the beach, but three men, Yann Chagnolleau, Dimitri Moulic and Alain Guibert, died. Two had remained stuck inside the boat that ran aground bottom up on the rocks at the end of Sables Beach. The fishing boat sank, and its skipper was still missing. Debris from the fishing boat and the wheelhouse were found as well as its life raft which was, however, empty. The hull could not yet be located. An investigation was opened in the afternoon by the brigade of maritime police of Sables-d'Olonne and the maritime gendarmerie of Lorient. At 7 p.m. the search by helicopters continued to try to find the fisherman. French report with photos:
