Title: EVER GIVEN severely damages Hamburg harbour ferry and pontoon
Post by: Jens Boldt on February 09, 2019, 06:52:58 pm
Ever Given (IMO 9811000) on Saturday morning severely damaged Hamburg harbour ferry Finkenwerder (ENI 05111310) which was berthed at the Blankenese ferry station. The ferry station's pontoon was also damaged.

Police assumes that strong winds at the time of Ever Given's departure for Rotterdam caused the collision.

Luckily no one has been harmed. There were no passengers on the ferry at the time of the collision. The crew of three of course was extremely shocked.

For the time being here's a report, some photos and a short video (in German only, though):

Best wishes,

Seeing the damage today with my own eyes the consequences of the collision could have been much worse if there had been passengers aboard...

Photos of FINKENWERDER can meanwhile be found in the "Causalties"-category.

Best wishes,
Jens

After analyzing Ever Given's blackbox police said that the collision was caused by a navigational error, rudder failure or other technical defects could be excluded.

The master of Ever Given is under investigation over endangering shipping traffic and bodily injury caused by negligence.

The damage of the HADAG ferry "Finkenwerder" is estimated to sum up to a six-digit amount of money...

Who received "bodily injury"?

Thanks also from me Jens.

An alarmingly close call, that could have easily caused fatalities.
The enduring problem of massive ships in (comparatively) narrow waterways, and with high winds.

Hope you are well,

Sorry for the late reply guys!

David, maybe I chose the wrong expression from the dictionary. :)
Anyway, according to German criminal law a heavy shock can be treated as bodily injury.
Bodily injury by negligence implies that a person was abused physically and/or that this person's health was damaged. (Looked this up on the internet and hope the translation is comprehensible...)  ;D

Rick, you're absolutely right. At the moment authorities are quite careful. Strong winds here lately and even some feeders get tug assistance during arrival, departure and terminal hopping - the big ones anyway since the accident.

And yes, I'm fine (according to circumstances) :)
Hope you are well, too!

Best wishes
Jens

Thanks Jens, that's helpful - I wondered whether that was what you were indicating.
