Hi,
after a lot of searching I cant find where you look to see the cargo of a ship eg. is it animal feed, wood etc
any help on this would be a great :)

Hi,
I'm afraid that this information is largely private between owner/charterer/broker. Shipping information portals such as LMIU, IHS and Clarkson provide limited spot fixture data which includes cargo information but this data is aimed at industry professionals and not for general public consumption.

sorry one more thing phil, I'm guessing the only way for the general public to know is to be at the dock an take pictures of the ship loading /unloading?

Phil is right in what he said about the tight limits regarding the information, which are around about a particular ship's cargo.
From time to time, however, you are able to find a port website providing a lot of information about the vessels which call to this port, including the cargoes imported/exported.

thankyou all for your feedback, im mostly interested in the uk ports, but like you said Phil for some reason that info isn't available to the general public, do you know the main reason for this?

Thanks David. That is handy for visits down south. It is a pity that Fremantle Ports (https://www3.fremantleports.com.au/VTMIS/Default.aspx) do not provide the same detail.
At least here with Aloca No. 1 and No. 2 berths only caustic soda comes in via No. 2 and alumina goes out on No. 1 but that is about it and owe the vehicle carriers and livestock carriers are fairly obvious. With the vehicle carriers you can see what they brought in on the dock; caravans the other day and grain harvesters a few days earlier :)

If it's Coastal Shipping cargoes in the UK (and some of Europe) then I suggest you take out a subscription to Coastal Shipping Magazine as that gives around the UK reports of arrivals and departures so you will soon get to recognise the pattern of cargoes and what ports deal with what although for a general cargo port such as Inverness (my local) sometimes you need educated guess work based on where the arrival is from.

Thanks all, for replies -complete enthusiastic newbie, so the only way to get information on inland ports and their cargo etc is
to watch from land unless in the industry an then you can find out what the cargo is? would port customs not provide this information no? to us general public people? :)

Well what do you mean by "Inland Ports", where traffic is handled only by barge or ports such as Goole, Sutton Bridge etc that are not on the coast but some distance up a river??
A lot (but not all) ports have websites, some are more useful than others. All UK ports produce annual accounts and some produced an annual report with a summary of traffic. Failing that you could write nicely to any that you are interested in, I'm afraid many (most) will not respond or not tell you as the information is classed as "commercially sensitive" - I think you just have to be patient and build up your own pool of knowledge!!
If you don't already, keep looking at AIS websites, Marine Traffic dot org is one of the most popular, that will tell you what ships and what type of ships are in port and their most recent ports of call for example if a ship has left Glensanda in Scotland then it will be carrying quarry products - you will build up your own picture of what and where in time.

Thanks Andrew, I get it completely now, I wasnt very clear, yes I do mean inland ports like Goole that are up rivers,especially the river Trent, the marine traffic site is good also, will enjoy the tracking process,

I have been collating the statistics on shipping for the various Sussex ports of: Littlehampton, Newhaven, Shoreham and Rye, and have done so for a couple of years now. Only Shoreham used to publish details of cargoes carried/discharged and which cargoes were to be loaded. This cargo information was published on a weekly basis, and was prone to inaccuracy, but it was the best that could be done at the time. This ceased some 18 months ago and in line with what other ports have done is not to publish such information, as has been stated it is commercially sensitive.
But there are other ways of getting the information, by using a port map and getting to know what wharves are used to receive say timber, aggregates, etc one can build up basic picture of what cargo is arriving where. Also other useful internet applications to use apart from Marinetraffic are: Twitter and Facebook.
As Littlehampton, Newhaven and Rye, do not publish anything but the Harbour Masters at Rye and Littlehampton use Twitter. When commercial shipping arrives sometimes details of the cargoes are reported, again these are worth investigating, as a tweet gives you direct access to the Harbour Master or his assistant, all you have to do is explain what you need to know and where the info is going.

In addition to my previous comment on this thread, another web application Fleetmon.com, does detail cargoes carried, on some ships. However I would advise caution wrt this information as it is sometimes incorrect.
