As if we were in such a hurry to get the photographs out from our hands...

I find it rather sad that the whole discussion about "quality and quantity" starts again and members start complaining about the present situation.

If you want lots of pic's in any quality go to marinetraffic or vesselfinder.

If you want high quality pic's go to shipspotting

For me it is as simple as that. I stay with shipspotting!

senseless discussion,,also when I think by now that the owners my be better off by hiring programmers who know what they are doing
Seems to me like the WINDOWS 8 roll out,, and we all know how that worked out

"There are other sites available"........what sites? do you call a site where you see a huge bridge with a microdot of a ship just visible, is that a site that can be compared with shipspotting.com.
It is like saying "mud is another form of concrete"
If any one likes to leave  shipspotting than good luck to him (he will be needing it , and lots of it,for sure).
Just go to these so called maritime sites and see the difference for yourself.
Now that the site is once again up and running let us give thanks to the nameless volunteers who managed to do the necessary to put the site once again on line.
Special thanks must go to Ken Smith ,who is a bulwark of the site.
Thanks Ken

And I too intend to wait out the repair job on our site rather than jump. Interesting that some talk about other options as vesselfinder and marinetraffic, but what about ships nostalgia and seatheships. I believe they are superior to V/F and M/T in respect of the random selection of various era postings on the lines of s/s. Though doesn't seem their traffic has really increased a great deal since s/s has been hibernating, but still some nice stuff there, worth a look if haven't been there before.

There is also the "Merchant Ship Photos at Yahoo" group( [email protected]) , an e-mail based system but can be a way of getting pics around if s/s stays out of action for longer.

I emphasise that I am only suggesting these as interim fill-in's as they certainly lack shipspottings capacity.

Cheers

Brent

Cool your heels, the high resolution of Shipspotting.com still has my first choice vote; but, there are other sites, too.
Hopefully, this site will be able to hold up for a long time to come.

evening everybody ,

well , i do not upload photo's reguarly here on this site, but i use it more like a google search machine , because shipspotting.com does have a huge database.

in my opinion the best picture's you can find are based at www.fleetmon.com , also a lot of mine picture's are also there.

Yep, Fleetmon.com also has decent resolution; but, shipspotting is still my first choice for photo posting, then fleetmon and then vesselfinder.

All this talk of "resolution" is a bit mis-leading. The resolution is determined as the photo is taken and can be either enhanced or ruined during post-processing. If a photo is uploaded with poor resolution to any site, it will remain a photo with poor resolution, regardless of the site.

Not necessarily always true. Some websites use additional compression to reduce file size after uploading. I don't know how it's with ShipSpotting.com, but it seems that this website shows original uploaded files when viewing full resolution pictures. This is good. This is worth supporting.

Also, I do not always agree that downsizing a picture "ruins" the resolution. Sure, the resolution is reduced, but I dare to say that the resizing algorithm in e.g. Adobe Photoshop is better than that of, say, Mozilla Firefox (that is, when it resizes the image to fit your screen). Thus, reducing the resolution before uploading (to certain sites) may have a positive effect on the perceived image quality. Also, if you upload a file that is deemed too heavy, the website may impose additional compression to reduce the size.

Furthermore, you cannot "enhance" resolution during post-processing. For example, my camera records about 24 million pixels, and I cannot increase the pixel count during post processing to 48 million. Sure, I can make the existing pixels larger, but even the smartest interpolation algorithms cannot bring "missing" details to the picture.

Here is how it rolls...

I am not a Shipspotter. I live far away from the sea. I visit Shipspotting to view and appreciate the masterpieces that members post here of beautiful ships. All the time and effort and the waiting and patience and the dedication to perfection.

A labor of love.

I am full of nonsense...but I do know one thing...nothing out there touches Shipspotting when it comes to bringing out the very best in a photographer..hi resolution and the beautiful photo/s shown to the world in all their glory.

Sure, I am getting tired of Shipspotting hobbling along. I want to see this place up to speed again. I have a big mouth but I cannot really help.

I wish I could though  ;)

I think this sentence is an excellent description of why Shipspotting.com has become so popular in recent years, and is growing so fast. This is a snowball effect, and this effect is impossible to deter.

Shipspotting.com nowadays appeals to many markets. Not simply those looking for outstanding quality photos, but simply anybody out there that is looking for a picture of a vessel, any vessel, from anywhere around the world, that is used for professional purposes, or for outstanding recreational purposes. It is a global website because of the huge dimension of its database. Name a ship, and you'll find it in Shipspotting. So Shipspotting.com is nowadays functionning like a world maritime encyclopedia, and in this capacity it has no rivals. The best place in the net where to find a time/space depiction of a vessel, virtually any vessel.

There are hundreds of websites, blogs and the like dedicated to ships in the net. If you Google in different languages, you end up in a countless number of sites, some better, some worse, some specialized, other generalist in scope, but none matches Shipspotting.com in what concerns the variety/quality viewers from around the world are looking for when it comes to a pictural depiction of a vessel.

It is perhaps interesting to note that Shipspotting.com is a rare example of a reverse economic rule. In this case it is a growing supply that has created a growing demand, and not vice-versa. And by now, the growing demand is creating even more supply, making Shipspotting.com self perpetuating (sponsors and servers allowing, of course...)

Let us all contribute to its continuing growth!

Jos
