Title: The end of marinetraffic.com for free?
Post by: Ron' Breizh on September 21, 2013, 11:29:41 PM
Hello guys!

As you can see in the following link, the website marinetraffic.com will change its interface soonest with more ads, some tariffs following subscribed services, no possibility to put the map on full screen mode, no automatic refresh of the map if you are not registered...etc

http://new.marinetraffic.com/en/p/plans (http://new.marinetraffic.com/en/p/plans)

Nothing is free in this world!

Bad news...  >:(

Ron

3229 per annum for the full package!! ???

What I noticed they have invested lot of money on AIS receivers and equipment around the world.Although ,there are lot of volunteers who send their AIS data with their own equipment they built the largest network so far.Unfortunatelly telecoms charges excess traffic plus maintenance etc.Once project at university became a business.I hope that at least those who submit AIS data have free access.
I am afraid that this ship spotting site could turn into pay site in near future.Just imagine how much traffic daily passes through the server. :'(

Yes I agree with you Sinisa about free access for people who transmit their AIS datas. I'm disapointed, I made at least one connexion per day on this website!
As Fergal said, tariff for the full package is so expensive!

Sorry, gentlemen, but I can't see it affecting the way I use it much, myself. The only time the updating frequency is important to me is when I'm tracking a vessel inbound to film it, so I'll just have to give myself a few extra minutes to jump in the car.

If I were using it professionally, I'd expect to pay whatever fee I needed to, to use the system in the way that I wanted too, so I suppose that if you are using it recreationally, but in a professional way, as I'd expect you are, I'd expect to pay, too . . . sorry.

Registration seems a small thing for what you get for free, anyway.

Any idea how they are looking after those who supply data to them ?
I've given them free data for years .. They'd better look after me now or i'll pull the plug !

Although a small amount , 1000s have paid

No idea Mike, sorry! But I think that you can send an e-mail at [email protected] to know exactly what it will happen for the users who transmit datas (e-mail found in the terms of use).

Ron

There's a preview of the new site on the old site, does that work on the app?

Also, as a shipspotter, I don't think the five minute delay on the free site will worry me too much.

Agree with you Sinisa but we can ask admins about that-
Admins........ how big are chances that this web-site will not be free?
Hope that this are just rumors, right?

It will still be free , 5mins refresh time it's not too much, currently it's about 3-4 mins
And also for those who give data to them , they all get pro plan for free.
Let's be serious , it costs a lot to run all that!

Well, as long as I'll still be able to upload vessels photos for free, it's OK...

(So far I only have, like, 18,000 or something...)  ;D

I registered from the free version and have to say I have no complaints.
The 'vessel details' pop-up is better than the original version.
The panel on the left with the display options etc can be displayed or hidden.
Pretty good overall.

Each time I try to log in, the site is telling me that there is an error.
Resetting password does not help. Any other members encoutering this problem ?

I am not worried about the 5 minute delay. The problem I have with the new site is that they plan only to allow a "My fleet" number of 5 vessels. At the moment I have close to 1000 listed in My Fleet...

Tried once more and now it works properly. I can live with the 5 minutes interval.

New site made uploading photos more awkward (= slower) than before: vessel's name & type do not appear in the fields, and it is more time consuming to check the uploading date...

"Photos uploaded" in "My account" is completely unreadable...

Anyway, will need some time to adjust to it...

Hello,

Hi Mark

No your not, I have tried everything most of the day and all I get is the Error sign.
The problem is it does not tell you what you have done wrong

I assume for the SMS you put in your mobile number and country code for UK I put 0044.

Filled out name and address and all * items, e-mail address, password etc.

As I am retired I clicked 'line of business' 'other'
For 'relation to ships' I clicked 'sport' as I am a yachtsman

Any one tell me what I am doing wrong

Hi Mike,

The spare square indicates the type of subscription. You should fill in "basic".
Then another space pops-up for the expiry date where you should put "never".

Good luck,
Robert.

It's either so slow or not working full stop, Keep getting a 503 error or it takes an age to load an times out.

Hopefully teething problems that will be resolved.

It's always the same another website tinkered with and changed for the worse. The 5 minute delay doesn't bother me as there was always a slight "lag" wih AIS anyway.

The members log in button also has a habit of disappearing to annoyingly....:(

They may have reverted, but there's something funny going on with the database: "Marie Maersk" was (finally) amended with correct data, but now I see she's back as "Mary"...

But, this is all secondary, as I keep getting the error message...:(

I think its a case of updating to much i personally prefer the old one as i get a full screen of map when copared to the new one i only get half a screen of map and the other half of adverts, i now am using the ship finder maps for watching stuff around the solent, but i use marine traffic for logging where ships have arrived from which is difficult if the data only goes back 24 hours for a non subscriber!!

Been around shipspotting for years & completely satisfied with the free access i,ve had to this beautiful site for us older seamen. I can,t afford any monthly payments to have site but according to KEN i,m supposed to have some access for free. What has happened here if that is so? Sorry Snocky, I don't understand. This thread is dedicated to the changes which occurred to marinetraffic.com, a site completely unrelated to shipspotting.com.

Which site are you having trouble accessing? If it's shipspotting.com (which is this site) there have been no changes whatsoever to free access - if you are experiencing difficulties it is more than likely an issue with browser settings your end. Perhaps try a different browser, for example.

if you are having difficulties with Marine traffic, then I suggest that you contact them directly.

Brgds

Site shows my registration & name & i don,t know what to do. Am not much of a computer person but it was working perfect all along.
