Just noticed a void in the "Fishing Vessels" category respect to what the reality in many fishing ports is.

Many fishing ports also have charter boats. These are vessels that can be chartered by individuals or groups to go out fishing. Big game, or simply small catch offshore.

The difference is that whereas regular fishing boats are part of the port fishing fleet, and are used by professional fishermen, charter boats have a professional crew (skipper, etc.) and are used by amateur fishermen. Charter boats can be small or quite large. Charter boat characteristics differ widely from port to port, and with the type of fishing they propose, and have been fitted to support. They are commercial vessels for all purposes. But they usually do not bear the same registration codes used by the professional fishing fleet.

Now, since in reality we often find these charter boats in the environment of fishing ports, and they become part of the universe we capture on photo, shouldn't the "Fishing Vessels" category include a subcategory for "Charter Boats"?

This would be equivalent to what you find already in the "Passenger Vessels" category for instance, more precisely in the "Harbour & Tour boats/restaurant vessels" sub-category.

Right now, and as things stand, "Charter Boats" fit nowhere, and are subject to Deletion by screeners because they are not part of the regular fishing fleets of a port.

Just a thought.

Thanks for reading.

I agree, well worth considering.

Often called "Sport Fishing boat", many are indeed sizeable vessels, some converted form commercial trawlers etx, and even the occasional ex-coaster.

Sport fishing boats commercial activity is transporting passengers.
The activity of the passengers is fishing.
I agree they should have their own subcategory but I believe they belong in the Passenger vessels category.

I certainly wouldn't support sport fishing as a category in Passenger Vessels.

Certainly E.Vroom's suggestion is interesting from the phylosophycal point of view. It is a perfect logical sylogism. From that standpoint it is correct.

However, if what we try to achieve with this hypothetical new subcategory is a nearer as possible depiction of reality, then his suggestion makes less sense.

It is true that Sport Fishing boats carry passengers. But many of them will need to be fitted in a very special way in order to attract the market of sport fishermen. This makes those boats special, and more similar to fishing vessels. Hence, it becomes logical to put them in the Fishing vessels category - because of the boat characteristics, and because of the type of activity they perform at sea, and not because of the commercial transaction from which their owners generate their revenue.

As an example of this separation, also "Ferries" carry passengers, but because they are so distinct from other passenger vessels, they belong to a category on their own.

I believe the same may apply to Sport Fishing vessels in general. And in my humble opinion, if Shipspotting decides to recognise them as a class of vessels on its own, then they would go under "Fishing Vessels".

Anyway, the matter is purely rethorical.

The point is that right now I do not know where to put them if I take them on photo...

My 2 cents' worth.

Best regards,

Jose
