On Saturday the 28th July the “Pearl of Para,” a cattle-carrying ship, arrived in the Bay of Gibraltar for bunkers at 3pm and departed three hours later, during its stay and assisted by westerly wind, a very unpleasant smell of dung was experienced by people  in the northern part of the town.
Investigation
An investigation could be carried out on the company responsible for the livestock carrier “Pearl of Para” that motored into Gibraltar waters last month. It follows the death of 400 pregnant cattle on the vessel carrying 3,900 cattle on its way to Australia from the USA.
According to the Animal Welfare Institute and Compassion in world Farming the hundreds of cattle that died after leaving Gibraltar waters may have suffocated due to a breakdown in manure removal and ventilation system.
The two organisations are calling upon the United States Department of Agriculture to take immediate action. According to reports, cattle exports from the United States have recently increased and the voyage can take over two weeks.
Compassion in World Farming received complaints from a local supporter, following the ship’s unannounced visit to Gibraltar, which also saw many complaints to the Environmental Agency Hotline About the ship’s unpleasant smell.
