GARÇON

There is some confusion on the Damen new build GARÇON.
http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1618839
My photo has been moved from "Yachts" to "Crew boats and Tenders including Ships Lifeboats" category by admin (I think). The other photos remain in the "Yacht" category.
Now I am rather certain that she is a (support)yacht, but not certain on the IMO.
I found IMO 9587051, but also IMO 9600750 is used in this site. Both IMO numbers seems to be recognized by "Ship information by AirNav ShipTrax and GrossTonnage.com".
On the other hand; a Yacht doesn't have a real IMO number I was told....
Can somebody make make a discission on the category?
Where is the correct IMO to be found?

Hi,in GROSSTONNAGE GARCON IMO 9587051 owned by SEMARINE YACHT MANAGEMENT vessel type tender
Gross 1125
IMO 9600750 tug ARCANGEL SAN MIGUEL gross 450 tons ,both ships built by DAMEN SHIPYARD in 2012
EQUASIS don´t register IMO 9587051,maybe because it is considered a yacht that I think Equasis is not interested
IMO 9600750 also in Equasis as tug
That is what I know,regards

Hello Stan
I have been watching these photos with interest and responding to comments that she is 'not a yacht'. Well, there's a lot of info about her on the web and she *is* a yacht, albeit a special kind of yacht called a 'support yacht'. You can find more detail here:
http://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/details/3815
http://megayachtglobal.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/seaaxe-67m-garcon-to-attend-monaco.html
Regarding the IMO number, 9587051 is correct. Yachts can have IMO/LR numbers though it is not necessary for 'pleasure' yachts to display them under SOLAS regulation XI/3. However the 'pleasure' definition is open to debate as many yachts operate in a commercial charter market hence you will find IMO numbers displayed accordingly.

Hello Phil & Ken,
Categorizing a vessel as a yacht on basis of publications in yacht magazines is somewhat strange, especially since the classification society has a different view. This is what I picked up earlier from Piet Sinke's Shipping New Clippings:
"Life aboard a modern superyacht demands ever more
gear
to maintain the highest level of luxury and comfort for owners and guests. The 69 mtr long
SEA AXE FAST YACHT SUPPORT vessel (FYS) GARCON
built by DAMEN and marketed by AMELS-is the ideal vehicle for stowing all that gear . . . and assuring all that luxury. The FYS is a high-speed, high-capacity, all-weather oceangoing craft that carries helicopter, tenders, toys, fuels, consumables, and crew, to free up luxury space aboard the "mother ship." Superb performance and seakeeping are assured by the new SEA AXE hull, an exclusive form created by the DAMEN team."
So her main purpose is to carry freight and other goods, not guests or passengers. This is a fast yacht support vessel which would be used by companies who exploit a fleet of yachts commercially. I feel you should create a new category for this ship, because knowing Damen there will be more to come. Alternatively you could create a subcategory under yachts.
Brgds,
Rob

Hello Robert,
Apologies - I should have made my comment clearer - she is a yacht support vessel. However, I do believe that 'yacht' is the best shipspotting category until such time as the ship type becomes more established.
Kind regards
Phil

I don't know, I'm no expert but I agree that it should have its own category. maybe not immediately but calling an FYS vessel a yacht is like calling an AHST an Oil Rig

Hello Phil,
I appreciate your comments but it is obvious this
yacht support vessel
is not a "yacht". A freighter is not a cruiseship either. I still feel it should have a separate (sub)category.
Brgds,
Robert.

Damen's website lists her under "yatching", so, if her designer's consider her to be a yacht / yacht support vessel, then surely we should class her as a yatch / yacht support vessel too?
Also - I think she's attending the monaco yacht show...

She's attending the Monaco yacht show, because that's where her future employers are. These future employers are used to luxury. That is the only reason why she's build with the same luxury standards. For the rest, she's not a yacht, she's a supplyvessel like the other Damen axebows and as I said she's specifically designed to serve yachtowners.
Cheers Fred

Just to clarify, there are no plans to create a category for this vessel, it has been amended and can easily be found by using either name or IMO number.

Ken

Hello Robert,
With all due respect, those are not class sheets. They are pages from IHS Fairplay's Sea-Web database. IHS Fairplay are merely a data provider and have no connection with any classification society, including Lloyds Register. Therefore, all we are seeing is IHS Fairplay's categorisation of the vessel according to their own definitions, not class. I would rather see a proper class report from LR (or BV - as that is the intended class mentioned elsewhere) before making a decision on the vessel type.
I take your point that she is a kind of support vessel. However, she is designed for the mega-yacht industry. The 'support vessel' sub-category is purely for vessels engaged in supporting the offshore energy industry, so she does not belong there.
A class report should be available to me very soon. I will liaise with Ken as to the next move but we'll keep her where she is for the time being.
Thanks for bearing with us!
Kind regards
Phil

Hello Phil and Ken,
I may seem a nuisance on this topic, but I feel that this unique vessel should be properly categorized. It should not be based on an incorrect interpretation of the vessel's description. Appreciate your efforts !
Thanks and brgds,
Robert.
