There are rumors about certain dissatisfaction among industry regarding IMO’s categorization of fruit juice carriers to same category as chemical tankers. This categorization refers to EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index), and IMO is using ship types from Fairplay’s IHS Stat code 5 (Statcode5v1075), where ships transporting fruit juices are categorized as Tanker/Chemical/A12H2LJ/Fruit juice tanker/.
It will be interesting to see how flag states and classification societies accept the above situation; i.e. large majority of the ships transporting fruit juices in bulk are registered and classed as refrigerated vessels and/or refrigerated fruit juice carriers.
Even Shipspotting.com categorization of these ships is confusing i.e. Tankers (subcategory Fruit Juice Tankers); because as per MARPOL a tanker is an oil tanker as defined in MARPOL Annex I, regulation 1 or a chemical tanker or an NLS tanker as defined in MARPOL Annex II, regulation 1.

So that would mean water is an oil if it's about water tankers?
Tanker is just a vessel that has tanks for transportation of liquid type of cargoes, incl. orange juice (btw, I want a glass of it right now!)

Hi Dennis. You are right, water is not an oil. Moreover, in Fairplay’s IHS Stat code 5 (Statcode5v1075) listing, the ships transporting water are not in same category with oil tankers, nor with chemical tankers and not with liquified gas tankers. That is the point, water is 'other liquid' (and not oil, not chemical, not liquid gas).
