delitions
« on: August 27, 2010, 08:13:36 PM »
Hi all,

the old problem of watermarks is comming up again.Today I got the message that one of my old pictures will be deleted because it has watermarks. For me means that all of my pictures will be deleted because all of my pictures have watermarks. I know the long discussion about wateremarks and for me all my pictures will have watermarks because Tomas made a lot of appointments to sell pictures from shipspotting to other companies and what the new owner will do no one konws. This was also the reason to upload no new pictures for the past.

I'm far away from the sea to Hamburg I have a longer distance as to Venice or Genova. My favorite is the Suez Canal, Panama Canal and since 2006 also Chinese harbours.

Hi Ken

This seems to be a worrying development.  My understanding was that there would be no retrospective deletion of photos posted before the 'site rules' were finalised and well publicised.   There are many valuable old photos on the site that do not fit the size criteria i.e. 800 x 640 size, are we to assume that these will be deleted when found ?

Hello Peter,

Do you refer to this picture here, which I have found in the deletions category ?

http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/photo-485419-Faith+I

The watermark on this one is IN the ship, not in corner of photo. This is very likely the problem.

It is true, your other photos do not have watermarks.

However, I find it very sad, that members do not upload photos anymore, because they feel, the new owner might sell the photos away !!

I think, it is definitely time, that the new owner here makes pretty much clear, what he is up to, and what are his plans, and whatsoever, IF the plan is to sell photos off here, then speak openly with us about this, and have members who support him, and others, who do not like this, leaving. They'd do this anyways, if they didn't like it.

Lack of communication spreads suspicion. Old story !  :-D

I would agree that the watermark in the photo referred to is rather conspicuous. However it does help to prevent it being "ripped off" although the positioning in this example could be easily cloned out by the unscrupulous.
As for copyright in the corner ..total waste of time as that could easily be cut out of the photo. Perhaps the watermark should be across the ship in an area difficult to clone out but inconspicuous to the casual viewer but known to the copyright holder, knowing where and what to look for.
see my photo http://kelvindavies.co.uk/kelvin/details.php?image_id=5001&mode=search . There is a watermark using free watermark maker from http://www.watermark-image.com/ . Cannot see how shipspotting could object to such a placement etc.

I use this company for all my watermarking. https://www.visualwatermark.com/. They have a one time fee and are not on the cloud.

I can recommend Faststone Image Viewer to tweak your photos and it contains watermark option. Its all free. http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm
