Are there any SD14s still in existance ??
« on: December 02, 2016, 11:50:37 AM »
From my research I think they are all gone with one exception

http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:675389/imo:7640378/_:47789f83b14c755856ac9f4ea92120b2

but even this one I have my doubts over ?

Yes, Mike, perhaps even TAN CHON has gone now - though certainly no confirmation of that found.
Last recorded port call 12 Oct 2014 sailing Yiang Yin Anchorage (Xiamen), China
Latest apparent AIS position 17/5/2016 at anchorage off Orang, North Korea:

Not sure about others.

Thanks for the reply .. yes I did notice that position on the MT site. Seems very close to the beach and miles from civilisation .. all a bit ominous  ???

The TAN CHON is clearly visible on Google Earth at Chongjin. The image is dated 080516. The AIS position further south nine days later appears to be an odd location so might indicate a casualty. As and when the Google Earth image is updated the situation may become clearer. North Korean vessels usually go to China for demolition.

Google Earth now has an image dated 26th October 2016 which shows TAN CHON on the same berth as the May image.

Google Earth also clearly shows the abandoned Brazilian-built SD14 variation AMAR still aground and fully intact close into the coast of Batam Island, Indonesia, across the strait from Singapore. Position is Lat 1deg 09'06.64"N / Long 103deg 58'29.26" E. Image dated 29/06/2016. Does anyone know if she is still there ?
