The container ship Maersk Garonne that ran aground near Fremantle Port on 28 February is currently being investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).

An industry source told IHS Maritime that the vessel is widely believed to have suffered an engine failure.

"If you look at the AIS [Automatic Identification System] tracking of the vessel as it came into port published on GCaptain, you see it went past the entrance then around," he said. "That's the track it took. So it's quite feasible it was [an] engine failure."

The AIS track showed that the 50,757 gt Garonne missed the turn into Fremantle Port before veering right.

According to Fremantle Port Authority (FPA), the container ship ran aground on soft sand about 500 m off South Ole while entering Fremantle Inner Harbour at 5.00 h local time. It reported that the vessel was then freed by tugs at about 08:30 h local time before anchoring in Gage Roads to be assessed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

FPA spokesperson Jeanette Murray would not comment on reports of engine failure when contacted by IHS Maritime, saying the incident was still being investigated.

FPA stated there were no injuries to any person or damages to properties, as well as no pollution caused from the incident.

An ATSB investigation team will attend the ship to interview relevant parties prior to finalising the report.
