HMS Plymouth
« on: August 16, 2014, 01:21:29 PM »
There are strong indications that HMS Plymouth will soon be leaving the Mersey on her final voyage to a scrapyard in Turkey.  This Rothesay Class frigate saw service in the Falklands and when decommissioned she formed part of the Historic Warships collection in Birkenhead docks. The collection was disbanded in 2006, since when she has remained in Birkenhead in an increasingly dilapidated condition as shown in this photograph taken in October last year
http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1937986.  The tug Amber II arrived in Birkenhead last Thursday reportedly to tow her to Aliaga although it is not known when this is planned to happen.  The HMS Plymouth Trust was formed in the hope of preserving her, but it would appear that their efforts have been unsuccessful.

With ships laid up like this, is there anyone on board? Do they keep pumps running to ensure no ingress of water to make her unstable? Or do they just hope nothing happens and seal her up?

Peel Ports issued the following statement this afternoon:

The Historic Warships Preservation Trust rented a berth for HMS Plymouth in 1990 within the East Float, Birkenhead from the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company but when the Trust went into liquidation in 2006, HMS Plymouth became, by default, the legal responsibility of Peel Ports.
We understand Plymouth City Council attempted to acquire the vessel and display her in the city

Barry,
All gone mate. Sitting here in Ellesmere Port, I thought I would take a look to see if I could get an idea of when she is leaving and there it is, at 09:20, passing Crosby on the way to Aliaga.

She left Birkenhead this morning at the start of a 19-day dead tow to Aliaga.

There's a short video of her departure on the Liverpool echo website

It is reported on the Facebook page of the group that have been trying to save HMS Plymouth that demolition is now well advanced.  Sad.
