I believe there was some tie up with Metcalf Motor Coasters in the earlier days until at least the 1950s.  The WSS issued a fleet list in 1965 which, I believe included the earlier Crawley vessels.  Bernard McCall's Coastal Shipping magazine did an article on Metcalf's a few years back which may have also included some useful references for you.

Best regards

Tom

Thanks Derek/Tom

never had that one on the list, great photo.

Once i have a list of names , then i can start to hunt google etc for pictures of each, i understand in the 90's they owned around 10 vessels? 2 water tanks and the rest oil/fuel?

I found this attached photo from a book

Hi Ben,

I'll have a look to see what photos I have.
Is this your full list, I could add a few more to that if required.

Hi Ben,

A quick look through my records list these additional vessels I have noted as working for Crawley although I cannot be certain. I will see what photos I have but a doubt there will many, film was kept for the big ones in those days, not the usual small craft unfortunately.

Thanks Bob

I spoke to an employee skipper at crawley and he confirmed the first 4 100% owned by them. But hasn't heard of the others.

Lady Kitty wasn't she owned by Palmers then?

Hi chaps,

Not sure if Lady Kitty has always been Palmers. I thought she was Crawleys back in the 70s/80s.

Gazelle was definitely Palmers though. A former Dutch Schuyt built in 1904.

This is a fascinating photo of the Vlist Ben, is that Victoria Deep Water Wharf in the background, if so what is the incident involving what seem to be most of the PLA's salvage craft, looks like a salvage job but of what and when. 1970's?

Hi Andrew

I found that one and a few others on a dutch forum, but sadly even when translated it didnt give much info or good english.    I think it is vic deep, certainly looks like it with Bay Wharf the upperside , i too wondered what is going on with all those PLA craft

Great work Ben...

@Andrew - yes, it looks like Greenwich. the Panamanian coaster "Frederika 1" sank in that spot on 30th January 1981 after a collision with the "Blackthorn". I can't be certain, but the salvage activity could be related to that incident.

The ship on Vic Deep looks like Prince Line's Crown Prince.
