Sounds exactly right to me, Lappino.

It sounds like many of the passengers who are presently missing, but who we can assume have died, might have been rescued, had the ship's procedures been better.

Whenever you travel by sea or air, you are so often either misinformed or poorly informed by service operators - isn't about time that a culture of telling passengers at least a reasonable level of the truth became standard?

The problem is that if you make safety briefings too long winded or involved then passengers will 'switch off' and take even less notice than they do now - which isn't much.

Certainly right there, JIm. But I'm thinking more of during the problem period - i.e. on the couple of times I've had serious airport delays, and couldn't get a straight response from the airline or the airport handling agent. I also sailed aboard a ferry, company nameless, where I interviewed the Captain outbound, but couldn't get any sense out of ship staff when she started doing bad weather circling outside Dover . . . It's crisis communication with passengers that could save lives and reduce problems if handled better.

Absolutely agree, what we need is much more properly trained staff to deal with such things together with an alternate command structure should one fail. At the moment so many merely do a cursory lifeboat ticket (or whatever its called now) with very little training in realistic emergency/abandonment scenarios.

@ James

I fully understand what you mean, with more training and possible better real scenario training etc,,but one thing is absolutely not possible to train,,WHAT the reaction in an emergency will be with peoples !!!
Some peoples stay totally calm,,even with adrenaline pumping out their ears (I am one like that, proven in an emergency reality in 2009 and in the course of my career in a few other situations)Some others go in lock down mode, like in the 2009 situation mentioned above,,all peoples aboard functioned good, but the one who did not was the Chief-Officer,,he was total wacked out !!!
And such things you can not train.

NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

Latest news coming out is that the captain of that ferry has been arrested for negligence of duty and violation of maritime law. Also, the divers are finding it very difficult to find the still missing 268 people due to low visibility and strong currents. UPDATE

(CNN) -- The following is a partial transcript of communication between an unidentified crew member aboard the sinking South Korean ferry Sewol and local maritime traffic control centers on Wednesday.

The discussion lasts more than 30 minutes. For the first 11 minutes the Sewol communicates with the Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center. After that, the ship communicates with the Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center. There are references to other nearby ships, which are redacted.

The transcript, translated by CNN, was provided by the South Korean government. Due to static, CNN could not hear parts of the audio recording to corroborate the transcript.

Sewol: It is listed more than 50 degrees to the port side and people are not able to move from left to right. We've alerted the crew members to wear life jacket and wait. It is impossible to confirm whether or not they wore (life jackets). Crew members are at the bridge and are unable to move. Please hurry.

9:18 a.m.

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: Roger that. How is the flooded situation?

Sewol: It cannot be confirmed either. We confirmed that several containers on the deck fell, but because we cannot move, we cannot move even by one step from the bridge, we are able to stand by holding onto the wall.

...

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: Patrol boat ETA is 15 minutes. Please broadcast and tell the passengers to wear life jackets.

Sewol: We are unable to broadcast.

9:24 a.m.

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: Even if you can't broadcast, please send someone to inform the passengers to wear life jacket or thick clothes.

Sewol: If passengers escape from the ship, will they be rescued immediately?

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: Dispatch the lift ring. Quickly!

9:25 a.m.

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: The captain should make decision to make people escape. We do not know the situation so captain make final decision on passengers' escape.

9:26 a.m.

Sewol: That's not what I meant. If passengers escape, can they be immediately rescued?

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: Patrol ship should arrive in 10 minutes.

Sewol: 10 minutes?

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: Yes 10 minutes! 10 minutes!

9:27 a.m.

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: Sewol, a helicopter will arrive in one minute.

Sewol: I can't hear very well. Please repeat again clearly.

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: A helicopter will arrive in one minute.

Sewol: Repeat what you just said.

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: A helicopter will arrive soon.

9:28 a.m.

Sewol: There are too many passengers. A helicopter may not be enough.

9:37 a.m.

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: Sewol, Sewol, this is Jindo VTS.

Sewol: This is Sewol. Sewol.

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: What's the flood situation like?

Sewol: It is not possible to confirm the flood situation. Coast guards and fishing ships approached by 50 meters and those who are on the port side escaped. We sent out broadcast and it is not easy to move toward the port side.

Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center: Copy that.

Sewol: The ship is listed 60 degrees to the port side. Now there are aircraft and coast guards.

A news website has reported that the ferry excessive commercial cargo loaded.

The ferry can only load cargo of less than a thousand tons, but according to the inspection data released over 3,600 tons of cargo including 180 vehicles were on board the sunken ferry.

Now after this incident the Koreans have vowed to overhaul their shipping industry. DETAILS

All 15 crew members involved in navigating the Sewol survived the sinking and all have been arrested.

Just because of the recklessness of a few people so many people lost their lives !!
